If
you are already a goat producer, you know well that there is a
shortage of veterinary service across the country. Even when
service can be located, fewer DVM's make farm calls these days,
and the ones that do are generally unable to get to your location
within the time that it takes a goat to die.
It is highly recommended that all meat goat producers establish a
relationship with a veterinary small ruminant specialist. However,
the reality is there will be many times [if not most of the times]
that you will have to use your own experiences, as well as those
of other ranchers, to attempt to treat and heal your animals that
become sick.
It is my hope that articles written
by me appearing on this website or in the print media will be
useful to producers in the meat goat industry. That said,
all information or opinions contained in these articles are based
on experiences from our specific management system, which may
differ substantially from yours. Any practices stated by us have
worked at our ranch, but should serve as a point of reference
only. As always, when considering and practicing animal health
management, consult with a locally based veterinarian or small
ruminant specialist.
