We did not enter
the meat goat business with Kikos in mind. Through painful
trial and error, we struggled to find a goat that could THRIVE, not
just survive in our climate with "Deep South" humid summers, and
bitter North Georgia mountain winters. We buried a lot of
goats, constantly trimmed hooves, and drenched a lot of de-wormer
prior to purchasing our initial Kiko herd. Simply put, the
Kiko breed solved all management problems for us. We now have
goats that work for US, we don't work for THEM. Operating a
Kiko herd is as simple as turning them out to pasture and letting
your goats just "be goats".
Kikos are from New
Zealand, a terrain and climate akin to ours with comparable rainfall
and parasite populations. Though the breed is relatively new to
the United States, interest and demand has soared as Kikos continue
to outperform all other meat breeds in parasite resistance,
motherability, low maintenance hooves, and overall hardiness and
production. Our
observation is that, for the purpose of operating a profitable meat
goat enterprise on any scale, Kiko genetics are superior to
any goat breed in existence at the current time.
